Fulani Braids, often refered to as Tribal Braids is an ethnic, tribal inspired hairstyle. This hairstyle originates from the Fula people of West Africa; The Fula people are an African ethnic group. Fulani braids started trending in the early 2020s, when celebrities started rocking these braided styles. Alicia Keys graced her first music video « fallin » wearing the look.

Here’s what makes Fulani Braids so spectacular :

This look sets itself apart from other cornrow styles because of it’s unique braid patterns. It usually consist of the iconic central cornrow braid or flat twist at the crown of the head. This style usually also has one or two flat twists or cornrows, braided on both right and left sides of the face, starting from the back and going towards the front of the face. These side braids\ twists, usually begin above the ears. The entire hairstyle is combed with thin to medium size cornrows/ flat twist. Fulani braids are typically adorned with hair jewelry and/or beads. And nowadays, many different shades of hair are being used to achieve this look in various lengths.

Because of it’s low maintenance and versatility, Fulani braids is one of the most popular braiding choices for both protective styling and on natural hair for black women.

Here’s A look at my favorite Fulani braids patterns and styles to consider:

1. Criss cross front

In this style, the iconic center braid remains. It is then crossed over by one or more cornrows from either side. Cornrow braids (one on either side of the face) starting from the top of the ear moving towards the front of the face are then added. The cross braids at the temple add a twist to the traditional Fulani hairstyle. This look is simple, yet classic and timeless. Perfect for the reserved girl who wants to take her hairstyle to another level.

2. Cornrow pattern, wrapped around hairline

This style first divides the hair in two equal parts with the iconic center braid. Then the hair is further divided in quarts ( 2 on either side of the head) with cornrow style patterns. Finally ending with a side cornrow on each side which starts from the top of the ear moving towards the front of the face. The cornrows in this style sweep the front of the hairline created a unique , yet sophisticated pattern.
